Random collapsibility and 3-sphere recognition

چکیده
A triangulation of a 3-manifold can be shown to be homeomorphic to the 3-sphere by describing a discrete Morse function on it with only two critical faces, that is, a sequence of elementary collapses from the triangulation with one tetrahedron removed down to a single vertex. Unfortunately, deciding whether such a sequence exist is believed to be very difficult in general. In this article we present a method, based on uniform spanning trees, to estimate how difficult it is to collapse a given 3-sphere triangulation after removing a tetrahedron. In addition we show that out of all 3-sphere triangulations with eight vertices or less, exactly 22 admit a non-collapsing sequence onto a contractible non-collapsible 2-complex. As a side product we classify all minimal triangulations of the dunce hat, and all contractible non-collapsible 2-complexes with at most 18 triangles. This is complemented by large scale experiments on the collapsing difficulty of 9and 10-vertex spheres. Finally, we propose an easy-to-compute characterisation of 3-sphere triangulations which experimentally exhibit a low proportion of collapsing sequences, leading to a heuristic to produce 3-sphere triangulations with difficult combinatorial properties. The threshold for d-collapsibility in random complexes
In this paper we determine the threshold for d-collapsibility in the probabilistic model Xd(n, p) of d-dimensional simplicial complexes. A lower bound for this threshold p = ηd n was established in [?], and here we show that this is indeed the correct threshold. Namely, for every c > ηd, a complex drawn from Xd(n, c n ) is asymptotically almost surely not d-collapsible.

Background: Several multiphase flow analyses have been developed to predict the fate of particles used in inhalation drug delivery; however, the collapse of droplets during their passage through respiratory tract has not been investigated. Objective: To assess the probability of droplet collapse in the upper respiratory tract. Methods: A 3D model of mouth-to-second generation airway after the tr...
متن کاملInvestigating the Development of Kerman’s Soil Structure and its Effect on the Collapsibility index
Kerman and its surrounding towns consist of a flat alluvial plain of fine silt and clay materials. In morphological aspects, these sediments have a very gentle slope with the main infrastructure of the city build on them. Generally, the structure of undisturbed soils is developed over time due to the influence of environmental factors. Geological factors in Kerman fine-grained alluviums have ca...
متن کاملSpatial statistics for lattice points on the sphere I: Individual results
We study the spatial distribution of point sets on the sphere obtained from the representation of a large integer as a sum of three integer squares. We examine several statistics of these point sets, such as the electrostatic potential, Ripley's function, the variance of the number of points in random spherical caps, and the covering radius. Some of the results are conditional on t...
متن کاملInvestigation of pore-scale random porous media using lattice boltzmann method
The permeability and tortuosity of pore-scale two and three-dimensional random porous media were calculated using the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Effects of geometrical parameters of medium on permeability and tortuosity were investigated as well. Two major models of random porous media were reconstructed by computerized tomography method: Randomly distributed rectangular obstacles in a uni...
